HRC62: Rwanda's Statement during the Urgent Debate on the Human Rights Situation in and around El Obeid, North Kordofan, Sudan

Mr President,

  1. Rwanda aligns with the statement delivered by Kenya on behalf of the Africa Group.

  2. We express our solidarity with the people of Sudan, and remain concerned by the security and humanitarian situation in and around El Obeid.

  3. We stress the importance of full respect for the protection of civilians, civilian infrastructure, and we underline the need to facilitate humanitarian access, and support efforts that contribute to de-escalation and accountability, in a manner that advances peace and reconciliation.

  4. Rwanda reaffirms respect for Sudan’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, and stresses that there can be no sustainable military solution to the conflict.

  5. In this regard, Rwanda supports the ongoing efforts of the African Union and IGAD, and coordinated regional and international engagement, to accompany an inclusive, Sudanese-led and Sudanese-owned political dialogue.

  6. In conclusion, we encourage all partners to align behind African-led efforts and avoid duplication, in order to achieve the aspirations of the Sudanese people.

I thank you, Mr President.
